Mid-Hudson News: HFFM school funding moves ahead in Congress
July 29, 2010
WASHINGTON – The Highland Falls/Fort Montgomery School District is one step closer to receiving $1.8 million in federal funding for education assistance programs.
The funding has been approved in the House and now moves to the Senate for action.
Children of the US Military Academy at West Point attend HFFM schools, yet because of federal and state tax exempt land, only seven percent of the available land in the district may be taxed to fund the schools.
As a result of a reduced district budget, non-essential programs have been cut and teachers and staff have been reduced at the same time that taxes will increase.
Hall has proposed legislation that would remove an existing cap on additional payments to the school district, while reducing its entitlement. That would ensure the district would no longer face a yearly shortfall, while still allowing other Impact Aid schools to receive necessary funding, said Hall.
