Poughkeepsie Joural: New rule will make it easier for veterans to file PTSD claim
July 12, 2010
By Emily Stewart
A new rule goes into effect Tuesday that will make it easier for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder to file for federal benefits.
Veterans will no longer need to prove a specific incident that led to their PTSD and a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs claims adjudicator would no longer be required to corroborate the victim’s claim with statements from others who served in the field.
The change will reduce the amount of time it takes a veteran with PTSD to receive services and benefits, provided the trauma is diagnosed by a V.A. psychiatrist or psychologist, related to fear of hostile military or terrorist activity and consistent with the places, types and circumstances of the veteran’s service, V.A. officials said.
